The spirit of 700,000 Heures has always been to share time, nurture encounters and then step back, leaving communities free to choose their own path forward. Each journey becomes a chapter shaped by place, people and moment.

This chapter unfolded in Peru during the summer of 2024.

The Peruvian Amazon experience

OUR JOURNEY INTO THE PERUVIAN AMAZON

Did you know that nearly 60% of Peru lies within the Amazon Basin? For a season, 700,000 Heures Impact journeyed into the heart of the rainforest – a living world suspended between mountains, rivers and mist, shaped by its own rhythms and extraordinary biodiversity.

Set near the village of Progreso in the Cordillera Escalera, private cabins nestled within the forest hosted our travellers who experienced daily life alongside the community and discovered the depth of local knowledge passed down through generations. Days unfolded between forest walks, shared meals and quiet observation, with opportunities to take part in projects supporting the land and those who care for it. One night, guests were invited to climb an observatory tower and watch the forest awaken at dawn. Through this chapter, we explored how micro-hospitality can support local livelihoods, protect biodiversity and contribute to long-term conservation efforts across the region.
